Édouard Manet, Bust-Length Portrait

Sitter Edouard Manet French
ca. 1868
Not on view
Manet's intensity and wit emerge, sizzling, from Degas's tightly packed lines. The portrait corresponds to Zola's description: "the eyes, narrow and deep set, have a boyish liveliness and fire; the mouth very characteristic, thin, mobile, a trifle mocking at the corners."
