Song Maojin Chinese
17th century
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 212
Song Maojin belonged to a circle of prominent painters working in his native Songjiang (present-day Shanghai) during the late Ming dynasty. This group included the esteemed artists Zhao Zuo and Dong Qichang. In this charming fan, Song created a view into a secluded garden retreat beneath a towering pine, where two men converse on the upper floor of a thatched cottage.
