Sandwich Man

The Federal Art Project encouraged artists to depict U.S. subject matter. Like others who focused on themes of poverty, disability, and social exclusion, Vogel subverted this requirement by portraying the vast inequalities that defined New York City. The sandwich man—a figure who existed on the margins of society—is shown striding through the street, past road signs and storefront mannequins. The advertising placard he wears depicts a glamorous model in profile. Her gaze directs the viewer to a beggar sitting on the ground. His sightless eye renders his face in a stylized manner that echoes her own. By arranging the elements in this way, Vogel highlighted a contrast between splendor and poverty, and between consumption and deprivation.
