Unbeschwerte Kinderspiele gehörten zu den Lieblingsthemen in Chardins Werken, der ein großer Naturalist unter Malern war. In diesem Gemälde von etwa 1734 ließ er sich sowohl beim Format als auch beim Subjekt von der niederländischen Genretradition des 17. Jahrhunderts inspirieren. Obwohl nicht klar ist, ob das Bild eine Botschaft enthalten sollte, wurden Seifenblasen damals als Anspielung auf die Vergänglichkeit des Lebens verstanden. Spätere Versionen dieses Themas befinden sich in Besitz des Los Angeles County Museum of Art und der National Gallery of Art, Washington.
