Dieses berühmte Gemälde, ein Meilenstein in der Geschichte europäischer Porträtmalerei, ist nicht nur gleichbedeutend mit El Greco, sondern auch Spanien und der Inquisition. Das Modell, Niño de Guevara, wurde 1596 Kardinal und machte sich einen Namen als Großinquisitor. Guevara war im Februar und März 1600 in Toledo und besuchte die Stadt 1601 und 1604 erneut. Sein Porträt muss bei einem dieser Aufenthalte von El Greco gemalt worden sein, der dort zu dieser Zeit lebte.
