枢機卿の肖像画、おそらく枢機卿ドン・フェルナンド・ニーニョ・デ・ゲバラ(1541–1609年)

ヨーロッパ肖像画の歴史における画期的な作品であるこの有名な肖像画は、エル・グレコだけでなく、スペインそして異端審問(宗教裁判)の代名詞となった作品です。モデルのニーニョ・デ・ゲバラは1596年に枢機卿となり、審問長として名をはせました。ゲバラは1600年2月から3月、1601年、そして1604年にもトレドに滞在し、当時トレドに住んでいたエル・グレコはそのいずれかの訪問の時にこの作品を描いたと考えられます。
