Als berühmtester Vedutenmaler Venedigs des 18. Jahrhunderts war Canaletto besonders bei britischen Besuchern der Stadt beliebt. Dieses wunderbar frische und gut erhaltene Gemälde zeigt die berühmte Piazza San Marco. Der Glockenturm hat hier weniger Fenster als in Wirklichkeit und die Fahnenmaste sind zu lang, doch bis auf diese Ausnahmen nahm sich Canaletto kaum Freiheiten mit der Landschaft. Der freie Umgang mit der Farbe und die helle Palette lassen auf ein Datum Ende der 1720er schließen.
