Die Zirkusparade

Seurats fein abgestimmter pointillistischer Ansatz verleiht dieser Szene von Künstlern der Zirkusparade am Eingang zum Cirque Corvi in Paris eine gewisse Zeitlosigkeit und geheimnisvolle Stimmung. Auf einer Bühne mit Geländer, unter dem trüben Licht von neun funkelnden Gaslichtern, spielen ein Anführer (rechts) und Musikanten (links) für ein Publikum potenzieller Kartenkäufer, deren diverse Hüte dem Vordergrund eine ironische und rhythmische Note geben. Der Künstler begann das Werk im Frühling 1887 mit Skizzen von Fernand Corvis Wanderzirkus, der in einem Arbeiterviertel in Paris aufgebaut war. Er entwickelte die Komposition dann über mehrere vorbereitende Studien. Als eine von sechs großen Kompositionen aus Seurats kurzer Karriere sticht Die Zirkusparade als sein erstes Nachtgemälde und das erste, das er populärer Unterhaltung widmete, hervor.
