Die in Sonnenlicht getauchte Landschaft von Collioure, einer malerischen Stadt an der Mittelmeerküste, war eine bedeutende Inspirationsquelle für Matisse und andere Künstler seiner Zeit. Ermutigt von Paul Signac, der zu jener Zeit ebenfalls in Südfrankreich malte, übernahm Matisse hier die lebendigen, innovativen Farben, die von den Fauves bevorzugt wurden. Kurz nach seiner Entstehung von Gertrude und Leo Stein erworben, stellt dieses Gemälde ein bedeutendes Werk aus Matisses kurzer Fauve-Phase dar.
