Il paesaggio assolato di Collioure, una pittoresca cittadina sulla costa mediterranea, fu una grande fonte di ispirazione per Matisse e altri artisti di quell’epoca. Incoraggiato da Paul Signac, anch’egli intento a dipingere nel sud della Francia in quel periodo, Matisse adottò i nuovi e vividi colori prediletti dal fauvismo. Questo dipinto, acquistato da Gertrude e Leo Stein poco dopo che fu completato, è un’importante opera che testimonia il breve periodo fauve di Matisse.
