Pollaiuolo, ein florentinischer Bildhauer, Maler, Graveur und Goldschmied, fertigte diese hochvollendete Zeichnung wahrscheinlich für Herzog Ludovico Sforza von Mailand als Modell für eine nicht ausgeführte Bronzestatue seines Vaters, Francesco Sforzas, an. Die Zeichnung befand sich im Besitz des Historikers und Malers Giorgio Vasari aus dem 16. Jhd., der sie in seinem Leben eines Künstlers (1568) beschrieb und der wahrscheinlich die dunkelbraune Lavierung um die Figuren hinzufügte.
