Das Thema des Vogels beschäftigte Brancusi sein ganzes Leben über. In Vogel im Weltraum konzentrierte der Künstler sich weniger auf den Vogel selbst, als vielmehr auf das Einfangen der Essenz des Fluges. Flügel und Züge sind nicht vorhanden, die Körperform ist verlängert und Kopf und Schnabel sind auf eine schräge ovale Ebene reduziert. Die Arbeit ist das erste Werk aus einer Serie, die Brancusi die nächsten beiden Jahrzehnte beschäftigte, bis in die 1940er Jahre. Er erschuf sieben weitere Marmorfassungen und neun aus Bronze.
