Atmospheric Landscape at Sunset
De Forest is best known as a pioneering champion of South Asian design influences in his decorative work. He also pursued painting, studying with his great-uncle Frederic Edwin Church, and emulating his fascination with diverse light effects. De Forest’s oil-on-paper landscape sketches, almost all completed in single sittings, serve as a visual diary of his far-flung travels to Europe, the Middle East, South Asia, and throughout North America. “Atmospheric Landscape at Sunset,” dated October 22, 1904, is among a group of sketches that de Forest completed after 1900, when he began spending winters in Santa Barbara, California. In this loosely painted view, the artist rendered water, trees, and grasses in a warm overall tone created by a setting sun.
