Listening to the waterfall from a moored boat, in the manner of Wen Zhengming
A spire-like central peak takes form through swift brushstrokes and broad washes of ink. A temple nestles in the left valley; on the right, streams fuse into a cascading waterfall. Beneath the cliff, shaded by dense trees that seem to flutter in the wind, a gentleman reclining in a moored boat listens to the sounds of temple bells and rushing water. Zhu Angzhi’s calligraphy describes the secluded atmosphere as a place where “not a speck of dust would reach.” Zhu resided in Suzhou, a city where artistic traditions and the practice of urban reclusion ran deep. In his inscription, he attributes his brush manner to the famous Suzhou artist Wen Zhengming (1470–1559).
