Landscape after Hua Yan
Trees dance in the foreground of this handscroll and arch along a distant ridge. Swirling brushstrokes generate dynamic landmasses. Between two twisting mountains that resemble oyster shells, a red gateway guards the pass. At right, a scholar being held aloft in a sedan chair bobs toward the summit, beyond which lies a broad riverscape. Painting in the middle of the nineteenth century, Liu Yanchong created this work as a close study of a handscroll by the artist Hua Yan (1682–1756). Liu also transcribed Hua’s long inscription recording the spring journey that had inspired his work. Copying and reinterpreting earlier artists is an important tradition in Chinese painting, and in this case, the original version also survives—Hua’s painting is in the collection of the Palace Museum in Beijing.
