Cloudy Peaks at Dawn

Zhu Angzhi Chinese
1822
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 214
Zhu Angzhi was a painter active in the city of Suzhou during the first half of the nineteenth century, and was known for his ability to emulate the styles of a broad range of famous artists. His inscription on this painting states that he followed the style of the twelfth-century artist Zhao Boju, who was famous for depicting landscapes with heavily applied blue and green mineral pigments. Here, Zhu has diluted the intensity of Zhao’s palette and blended ochre into the lush peaks, casting a warm glow that suggests morning light on fresh mountains.
