Necklace with Faceted Carnelian

This necklace belongs to a group of jewelry worn by nomadic tribal people in Eastern Turkey from the Lake Van Region. Characteristic of such jewelry are the large size globular faceted carnelian beads and the pairs of drop-shaped silver sheet elements which are the main elements that visually stand out from the pendants. The carnelian is known for its protective qualities and is often used in tribal jewelry between Turkey and Central Asia. Worn around the neck, the necklace thus embellishes the wearer while protecting her at one of the most fragile parts of the body.
