Longman first modeled a portrait bust of Henry Bacon (1866 – 1924) in 1918. Bacon was an American architect who began his apprenticeship with a Boston firm but soon left for New York to join McKim, Mead, & White. In 1889, he won the Rotch Traveling Scholarship for architecture, enabling him to study in Europe for two years. He returned to work with McKim, Mead, & White until founding his own firm with James Brite in 1897. They dissolved this partnership in 1902. Bacon then practiced under his own name until his death. He collaborated at times with Daniel Chester French, as in the Lincoln Memorial at Washington D.C. Longman considered Bacon "a dear friend." She probably met him while an assistant in French’s studio between 1901 and 1905.
