In 1887 Proctor produced a first version of a statuette of a newborn white-tailed deer while in New York, drawing inspiration from visits to the Central Park Menagerie (now the Central Park Zoo). He reworked his model after arriving in Paris in fall 1893, and completed this second, more refined version. Here the young animal stands tentatively, with ears back and head lowered, expertly projecting the fragility of new life. This cast was purchased directly from Proctor in 1912.
