Brook and Meadow

ca. 1907
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 773
Watercolor was well suited to Sargent’s fluid painting technique and his longstanding interest in depicting water. Sargent transforms his pigments into a flowing stream with expressive brushstrokes and dashes of blue paint, which ripple across the surface of his composition to suggest the gentle movement of the current.
