Young Woman with a Black Skirt

early 1880s
Not on view
During his two visits to Venice in the early 1880s, Sargent focused on portraying the muted harmonies of the city. He often ignored the picturesque canals and highly recognizable tourist sites; instead, he captured the city’s narrow streets and murky interiors populated by locals in Venetian dress. This watercolor could well be a study for one of the women who appears in these works. The solidity of form and attention to detail recall the influence of his teacher Carolus-Duran. He also may have been responding to works by the Spanish artist Mariano Fortuny, which were popular in Paris at the time.
