Study for Poppy Shade
Louis C. Tiffany American
Probably designed by Clara Driscoll
Possibly made by Alice Gouvy American
Not on view
This full-scale watercolor study for sixteen-inch conical Poppy shade shows one full repeat of the design, which would appear a total of three times to form the complete shade. From this study, the "selectors," which, in the case of floral lamps, were women, would choose appropriately colored glass from a stock of several tons that Tiffany kept on hand. The luminous, translucent quality of the watercolor medium produces an effect very similar to that of light shining through glass.
