The subject, identified by the inscription beneath his cowl, was presumably the theologian Hieronymus Onuphrius who wrote De Paenitentia virtute (Venice, 1616) and Aureae disputationes de anima (Venice, 1619). The head was probably in a niche, affixed by the iron strap protruding from the back.
