Grande Galerie carpet no. 11 (Music, reweave)

Workshop director Woven in the workshop of Jeanne Haffrey (Veuve Lourdet) French
Designer After designs by Charles Le Brun French
Delivered August 26, 1688
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 524
This impressive carpet was produced at the conclusion of the Grande Galerie project. It was woven after the same painted design (cartoon) as the eleventh carpet of the series, which the king had presented to the ambassadors of Siam (present-day Thailand) when they visited Versailles in 1685. The iconography revolves around the subject of music. Images of low-relief sculpture represent Euterpe, the muse of music, and Erato, the muse of erotic lyrical poetry, who is accompanied by a cupid playing the trumpet. Symbols associated with music appear on many Grande Galerie carpets. Here, the numerous versions of colorful acanthus scrolls dancing on the signature black background evoke the endless variations on the same theme characteristic of Baroque music.
