Martin Luther (1483–1546)

Johann Wilhelm Reyffenstein German

Not on view

This portrait medal depicting Martin Luther as a preacher at the age of sixty-three was probably issued to commemorate the death of the German reformer in 1546. It has been attributed to Johann Wilhelm Reyffenstein, who lived as a student in Luther’s house in Wittenberg. Inscribed on the reverse is the reformer’s motto, drawn from Isaiah 30, "In quietness and in confidence shall be your strength."
