The fish plate enters the repertoire of Greek vase shapes at the very end of the fifth century B.C. It is so designed that the juices flow into the central cavity which, however, may also contain a special sauce. Pottery fish plates are most numerous; they begin on the Greek mainland but very quickly proliferate in the Greek colonies of southern Italy. Examples in marble are much rarer.
