Fragment of a terracotta plate

Attributed to Lydos
ca. 550 BCE

Restituted
This artwork was restituted in September 2022. It is no longer in the museum’s collection.
Two male figures, one possibly the god Hermes

Like the inside of a cup, the central portion of a plate required an artist to compose his subject within a circle. The verticality of the figures here suggests that Lydos provided a horizontal ground line for them. His artistic personality is evident in the breadth of his figures and the controlled execution of detail.
