Glass mosaic inlay fragment

Roman

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 171

Translucent deep purple, appearing black, and opaque white.
Flat, irregular hexagon, with one long rounded edge.
Marbled mosaic pattern in a black ground with white threads and swirls.
Polished upper side; pitting of surface bubbles on upper side; dulling, pitting and patches of weathering on underside and edges.

This small piece of marbled mosaic glass is roughly shaped as a lozenge or hexagon, suggesting that it was an inlay in a larger opus sectile panel of geometric design.
