Glass mosaic inlay fragment

Roman

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 171

Opaque deep purple and white.
Flat, triangular plaque.
Marbled mosaic pattern in red ground with tiny red streaks and white rods.
Chipped edges and corners; polished upper side; pitting of surface bubbles; thick creamy weathering and some iridescence on underside and some of edges.

The colors and patterning are probably a deliberate attempt to imitate a luxury stone such as red porphyry.
