D’mba (great mother) figure

Baga artist

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 341

This representation of d’mba, depicts the embodiment of mature womanhood and maternal power. The crested hairstyle, facial markings, and prominent belly express ideals of beauty, fertility, and strength. She stands for the “universal mother” and is honored in both public performances and private shrines. Baga communities regard motherhood as essential not simply for families, but for the entire society at large. This figure was likely used in a ritual setting to offer blessings and protection for women, children, and the land.
