Burial post
Not on view
This post was reportedly used as a burial marker on the Peruvian South Coast before the Inca conquest of the region. Most of the post would have been underground when in situ, and it still bears the marks of the rough cutting tools used to shape the sculpture. The head, which would have been above ground, features a stylized face, suggesting a generic ancestor rather than a specific individual.
