The temple scribe Paunena kneeling with an offering table

New Kingdom

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 124

This figurine represents a kneeling man wearing a heart-shaped pendant around his neck and holding an offering table. His long wig and pleated sleeved garment date him to the end of the Eighteenth Dynasty and the beginning of the Ramesside Period. The titles on the back pillar identify him as a temple scribe, probably in a temple of Amun. Such small statuettes could have played significant roles in various contexts, such as in domestic and communal rituals celebrating Paunna in his lifetime and after death.
