Susan Alice Dashwood British
Not on view
This drawing was made by Susan Alice Dashwood, a descendant of Sir James Dashwood (1715-1779), 2nd baronet, who built Kirtlington Park―a house whose elegant Rococo dining room is now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Here we see the library in 1886, still retaining its original ceiling and overmantle, with the latter surrounding a portrait of Elizabeth Spencer, the 2nd baronet's wife. At this date, the estate belonged to the artist's father, Sir William Henry Dashwood, 5th baronet (1815–1889), who is depicted reading by the fire.
