The state of Morelos in Mexico was created in 1869 through decree by President Benito Juárez. Its first governor, General Francisco Leyva Arciniegas, is shown here attacking a small man representing the state. The labels on the governor’s sleeves identify the institutions he purportedly abused. The newspaper in which this print appeared opposed the Juárez government and supported the presidential candidacy of General Porfirio Díaz who, after his election in 1876, became a de facto dictator.



El estado mexicano de Morelos fue creado en 1869 mediante un decreto firmado por el presidente Benito Juárez. Su primer gobernador, el general Francisco Leyva Arciniegas, se muestra aquí atacando a un hombre pequeño que representa al estado. Las etiquetas visibles en las mangas del gobernador identifican las instituciones a las que supuestamente atacó. El periódico en el que se publicó esta estampa se oponía al gobierno de Juárez y apoyaba la candidatura presidencial del general Porfirio Díaz, que, tras ser elegido en 1876, se convirtió, de facto, en un dictador.
