The state of Morelos in Mexico was created in 1869 through decree by President Benito Juárez. Its first governor, General Francisco Leyva Arciniegas, is shown here attacking a small man representing the state. The labels on the governor’s sleeves identify the institutions he purportedly abused. The newspaper in which this print appeared opposed the Juárez government and supported the presidential candidacy of General Porfirio Díaz who, after his election in 1876, became a de facto dictator.

In the one binding, 369 lithographs by different artists from issues of three periodicals with the date range 1865–73. The binding is contemporary with the prints.
