Towing a Boat in a Rainstorm
Not on view
In this painting, the modulated brush lines and vivid use of ink washes to model forms and evoke a moisture-laden atmosphere betray none of the hallmarks of the Southern Song academic style as defined by Ma Yuan (active ca. 1190–1225) and Xia Gui (active ca. 1195–1230). Recalling the late eleventh-century style of Guo Xi and other Northern Song masters, the painting can reasonably be dated to the early Southern Song era.
