Herald of the Spring Breeze

Zeng Xi Chinese

Not on view

A fluid surge of ink traces the line of sap in a flowering branch. Zeng's inscription, written in a style that conveys his study of Han clerical script, notes the popularity of plum painting during the Qianlong era (1736–95), but identifies Jin Nong's (1687–1764) plum style as his favorite. Zeng Xi's freely brushed branch in dilute ink expresses his admiration of Jin Nong through emulation.
