An accomplished portraitist, Shannon collected and studied old master drawings, and here uses a traditional three-color chalk technique to portray Elbert Jan van Wisselingh. The latter art dealer and print pubilsher came to London from Haarlem to establish the Dutch Gallery in 1892 as a London branch of E.J. van Wisselingh & Co. With Charles de Sousy Ricketts, Shannon worked on a range of artistic and publishing ventures around this time, and also made experimental lithographs, several representing Wisselingh.
