The theme of the death ship inspired Westermann throughout much of his artistic career. He created twenty sculptures and eight prints on the subject. His firsthand experience of death as a marine gunner on the carrier USS Enterprise in the Pacific during World War II influenced this fixation, which he related in a characteristic darkly comic style. A consummate film buff, Westermann was also influenced by movies, in particular a German film from 1959 titled The Death Ship (Das Totenschiff), based on a novel by B. Traven.
