Paperweight in the shape of a horse

China

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 214

This horse paperweight is enlivened by its roan coat of dappled gold. The animal’s whimsical expression and the flames emerging from its withers indicate that this is no common steed. The playfulness of such utensils invited their owners to admire and handle them.
