This head covering was created using a technique known as sprang, which produces a highly elastic, netlike fabric. After stretching a system of parallel warp threads on a frame, the weaver would generate the fabric by twisting and interlacing the threads. Greek vases from as early as the fifth century B.C. show women wearing sprang-like head coverings.
