Bowl with Acanthus Leaf Handles
Nephrite, especially in shades of green and white, was a favorite material of the Mughal Emperors (1526–1858) in India, who inherited the taste for this hardstone from their ancestors the Timurids of Central Asia. At the Mughal court, nephrite was used to create a variety of objects, including vases, bowls, containers, and pieces of jewelry. This bowl has been sensitively polished to create vegetal motifs on the verso, and the handles have been carved in the form of acanthus leaves.
