This dyed linen fragment is hand-blocked with a repeating inscription in kufic, “Sovereignty is Allah’s” in black outline and gilded. Above the inscription is a simple horizontal border of alternating circles and ovals within straight lines. The print is ornamented further through the stylization of the vertical shafts of the letters and the purposeful mirror images that are created within the inscription, giving the design a rhythmic cadence. The uneven printing of the inscription and the quotidian nature of the phrase suggest the textile may have been mass produced.
