In addition to works of romantic and epic poetry, members of the Timurid elite also patronized the writing of historical texts, perhaps to establish their own place in world history. This folio is from a manuscript copy of the Majma'al‑Tavarikh (Compendium of Histories), a text commissioned by the ruler Shah Rukh (r. 1405–47) in A.H. 826/A.D. 1423. This history begins with the story of Adam, whom we see here setting out on pilgrimage, dressed in simple garb and carrying a beggar’s bowl.
