When Piran returns, the khaqan is presiding over a council of the allies. Shangul, the shah of Hind (India), brushes aside Piran's suggestion that they accept Rustam's conditions. Instead he wishes to engage in single combat with Rustam. Meanwhile, Piran and his clan consider Shangul to be foolhardy and prepare to distance themselves from his partisans on the battlefield.
