A Boating Party under Azuma Bridge
Torii Kiyonaga Japanese
Not on view
Avoiding the hot summer sun by escaping into the shade, boats anchor under Azuma Bridge on the Sumida River, near Asuka. This famous site is clearly identified by actual landscape elements, such as the upper crossbars of the gate of the famous Mimeguri shrine on the shores of the Mukōjima district, seen in the background through the trusswork of the bridge.
Torii Kiyonaga, the leading pupil of Torii Kiyomitsu (ca. 1735–1785), the master of the Torii school of Kabuki actor portraits, was an excellent designer of prints of elegant beauties as well as of actor portraits.
