"Rustam Kills the White Div", Folio from a Shahnama (Book of Kings)

Author Abu'l Qasim Firdausi Iranian

Not on view

Rustam had to perform seven difficult and dangerous feats in order to rescue his king, who had been captured by the divs (devils) of Mazandaran. The last battle, with their leader, the White Div, was a terrible one, which took place in a dark cave. In the course of combat Rustam cut off the div's leg. A later restorer, unfamiliar with the story, has clumsily reattached it here.
