The Annunciation
Circle of Gerard David Netherlandish
Not on view
This leaf may have been part of a grand Breviary, a type of book containing the psalms, scripture readings, antiphons, and prayers for each day of the liturgical year. Such large-format Breviaries were produced in Flanders in the early sixteenth century. The style of this miniature resembles that of Gerard David—in particular the master’s interior settings and facial types—but the unconvincing placement of the figures in space suggests the hand of a close follower or imitator in Bruges.
