Saint Jerome Praying

Spanish or Northern Italian

Not on view

The plaquette depicts Saint Jerome in the wilderness, kneeling and holding a crucifix. A lion, an attribute of the saint, lies at his feet. The open book is an allusion to Jerome's role as a biblical scholar and translator of the Bible into Latin (known as the Vulgate). The book is inscribed "S I", for Sanctus Ieronymus. This aftercast has some loss of detail.
