Steelyard
Returned to lender
This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender.Steelyards were a Roman invention used for measuring. This one, with two scales—one in Greek, the other in Arabic—shows their continued use into the Byzantine and early Islamic eras. The decoration of scrolling vines and foliage rather than animals reflects the influence of Islamic taste.
